I have been teaching for 15 years. I have taught mainly first grade, but have also worked with students in a variety of grades.
Most recently, I have been working with native Spanish speaking students who are struggling in reading. I work with small groups of students and teach them to read in Spanish. This allows them to become proficient in reading and transfer their skills to English.
Teaching students a second language at a young age allows them to produce that language in a native like manner. Research has shown that children access information from various parts of their brains when they are able to speak in more than one language.
Dual immersion education has been a passion of mine since beginning my teaching career in 1999. I hope that some day, all students in the United States will have the option to learn another language starting in kindergarten.
