By teaching thematically using a high percentage of non-fiction texts you can greatly increase the amount of content delivered to your students. Students need to learn to read non-fiction selections from the time they begin to read. By exposing your students to factual texts, they will learn how to find facts within the text and to synthesize information.
Choosing non-fiction will greatly increase the vocabulary skills of your students. Older students can read selections and then write about what they have read. They should be able to look back to find facts. Younger students can write about what has been read to them. By participating in a writing activity, the students use the vocabulary and internalize the content of the material presented.
