Synthesizing the Common Core Standards

Take some time  now or over the summer to "map-out" the units you will teach next year.  Start by reviewing your science and social studies standards.  Social studies standards are not yet available, so use those established by your district.  Choose non-fiction texts, writing prompts, and vocabulary activities that will enhance the learning of the concepts you've chosen.

Next, look at the language arts standards for your grade level.  Match these standards to the non-fiction  material that you've selected.  Finally, you'll want to find fiction texts that match your theme.  These texts will help to build vocabulary.  They will also allow you to meet the ELA standards.  Your lessons can include character, plot, writing about the story, etc.
